Moonlight Shadow” is a song released in 1983, and remains Mike Oldfield’s most successful single. Maggie Reilly performed the vocals, but Oldfield wrote the lyrics and was the song’s guitarist.
The song tells the story of a woman who loses her lover to a violent struggle in the middle of the night. People have since speculated that the song refers to the death of John Lennon, who was killed by gunman Mark David Chapman in 1980.
