• Easter Island, also called Rapa Nui, is a small island located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean and is considered a special territory of Chile.
  • The only sandy beaches are on the northeast coast. Easter Island we think of of huge stone carved figures – Easter Island Stones (or Eastern Island Stones).

  • The Chilean government claimed possession of Easter Island in 1888 and, in 1935, designated it a national park, to preserve thousands of archaeological sites.
  • Easter Island consists of old volcanoes with three crater lakes. It has an area of 163 square kilometres and a population of slightly over 5,000.
  • Only about a dozen eventually returned to Easter Island, but they brought smallpox, which decimated the remaining population of 1,500.
