  • A high street is the heart of an area, it is where you will find the shops, post office, pubs etc. It's what we would call "Main St." in North America. Not just in London, you'll find the term High Street all over England, although here in Cornwall you're more likely to find Fore Street. You will find that many towns do have a road called High Street, but it is used as a generic term as well.
